Community tips lead to Mt. Vernon gun, drug bust

Tips from the community led police in Mount Vernon to raid an apartment and make a gun and drug bust Friday.

Armed with a search warrant, police entered a second-floor apartment on Mount Vernon Avenue at 6 a.m. Police say they found a .380 caliber weapon and numerous rounds of ammunition from different guns.

Police also say the discovered a bulletproof vest, which apparently belonged to a New York state court officer. The investigation into the vest is ongoing.

According to police, they also found small amounts of marijuana and some scales. Police arrested 39-year-old Kerwin Campbell, who has a prior criminal record.

Police say the bust is part of their crackdown on guns and violent crime. Officials say they need the continued help of residents to make more arrests.
