White Plains brush fire chars 3 acres of woods

A brush fire in the woods of White Plains spread to West Harrison Thursday leaving three acres of land scorched.

Nearly 75 firefighters from the area descended on the woods near I-287 to fight the flames. Westchester County helicopters doused the flames with water from the air. Officials were able to extinguish it just before nightfall, averting an even more difficult situation.

West Harrison residents gathered to watch the fire crews as the flames crept closer to their homes.

Police continue to investigate whether the fire was sparked by the dry conditions or by an open flame manually started.
