Teen with gang ties dies from gunshot wound

A teenager who was shot last month in Mount Vernon has died, renewing efforts to find the shooter.
Jarel Patterson was pronounced dead Friday at Jacobi Medical Center. He was shot in the head around 3:30 a.m. April 25 after celebrating his 18th birthday at Mr. Shoes bar. Patterson's 21-year-old friend, Bobby Hyde, is in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the neck.
Police are investigating whether an old gang rivalry is to blame in the shooting of the Bronx men. Officials believe Patterson was connected to a group called the Seymour Avenue Gang. "The victim has had a past in the Bronx," said Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong. "He's been shot in the past and he's been accused of crimes there."
According to investigators, Patterson might have also been involved in the death of alleged rival Christopher Penn, who police believe shot Patterson three years ago.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Mount Vernon police at 914-665-2500.
