Parents to petition board over bus route cuts
Parents with children attending two Bedford schools plan to petition the board to keep school buses running.
The Bedford Central School District wants to eliminate bus routes for students who live within a half-mile of Bedford Village and Pound Ridge Elementary schools. In some cases, students would have to walk on state highways.
Parents say they're not upset about their children having to walk. They're concerned about the areas where their children will be walking.
"We have no sidewalks. We have no shoulders," says Martha Henning. "We have no crossing guards. We have no crossing lights. We have no traffic signals. ? There is no safe way for children to walk."
The school board says it wants to cut the bus routes to ensure that those two schools don't have services denied to schools in nearby Bedford Hills and Mount Kisco. However, those areas have sidewalks.
The parents plan to petition the school board to establish a child safety zone for Bedford Village and Pound Ridge Elementary schools.
