Yorktown man charged for knocking down clock tower
Police say a Yorktown man was arrested for toppling a clock tower in White Plains after a News 12 Westchester viewer called in with a tip.
Ardian Shala, 24, is facing charges for leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Detectives aren't sure if Shala was under the influence of alcohol.
The Millennium Clock Tower, which was a gift to the county in 1999, stood across from the Westchester County Center for more than eight years. It would originally used to count down to the millennium.
Investigators say Shala jumped the curb and slammed into the tower Sunday morning. According to police, he gathered evidence from the scene before fleeing.
?The car stopped, the driver exited the vehicle, surveyed the damage [and] picked up some pieces, including a bumper he left at the scene,? Sgt. Michael Brancamp, of the Westchester County Police Department, says.Shala was released on his own recognizance.
Officials from the county say they are not sure if the clock tower will be re-erected.
