Monsignor Timothy Dolan named New York archbishop

(AP) - Pope Benedict XVI has named MilwaukeeArchbishop Timothy Dolan as the next archbishop of New York.

The Holy See made the announcement Monday. Dolan succeedsCardinal Edward Egan, who is retiring after nearly nine years.

The archbishop of New York is the most prominent post in theU.S. Catholic Church.

Dolan's appointment extends a nearly unbroken chain of Irishmenwho have held the job since the archdiocese was founded twocenturies ago.

Dolan has been the Milwaukee archbishop for about seven years.Before that, he led the elite U.S. seminary for priests - thePontifical North American College in Rome.

The New York archdiocese serves 2.5 million Roman Catholics. Itis the second-largest diocese in the country after Los Angeles.
