White Plains police probe woman's death
Police have identified the woman who was found dead inside a vacant home on Harmon Street in White Plains over the weekend.
Investigators would not say how 40-year-old Maria Tacuri died, only confirming that the crime does not appear to be random.
Members of a local neighborhood group are wondering why the house where the woman's body was found Sunday was not boarded up.
"I don't know how she got in there like that without somebody seeing what's going on," says Augie Zicca, of the Battle Hill Association.
Police say Tacuri was staying with relatives on School Street, just around the corner from where her body was discovered. According to a source, the victim is from Queens and has two grown daughters.
A spokesman from the mayor's office says the house on Harmon Street was vacant, but not abandoned. At the time of the incident, it was being renovated, although the owner allegedly did not have the proper permits to do work there.
