Lawyers: Teacher in sex sting is drug addict

Lawyers for the Pelham Middle School teacher arrested in an Internet sex sting say their client suffers from depression and has a drug addiction.

Gregg Cavaluzzi, 34, is facing federal charges of enticing a minor for sex and if convicted could spend 10 years to life in prison. Authorities say just before 5 a.m. Sunday Cavaluzzi went to what he thought was the home of a 15-year-old girl in Elmsford and was arrested by detectives and the FBI.

According to investigators, Cavaluzzi had been sending sexually explicit messages and photos over the Internet to who he thought was a 15-year-old girl. But the teen was actually an undercover officer and police say Cavaluzzi arranged to meet up for sex.

Cavaluzzi taught seventh-grade social studies in Pelham for the past two years but school officials say he submitted his resignation about a month ago citing personal reasons.

He is due back in court June 15.
