Yonkers teachers meet amid pay dispute
The Yonkers teachers' union held an emergency meeting Wednesday to discuss a grievance filed against the school district.
Yonkers Teachers Federation President Pat Puleo says the school district froze teachers' "step" raises in July. As a result, Puleo says educators were taken a "step" back and then brought forward again in September, essentially remaining in the same position.
"We have teachers who are in their second year of teaching making the same as teachers in their first year of teaching," Puleo says.
Schools Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio argues that teachers received a 3 percent salary increase, and holding them back a "step" didn't affect their seniority.
