WC lawmakers postpone housing vote

(AP) - The Westchester County Board of Legislators has postponed a vote on whether to approve a $62.5 million housing settlement or go to trial.

Tara Martin, a spokeswoman for the county Legislature, said the vote, which was planned for Monday, is now expected Tuesday night; the court-ordered deadline is Thursday.

The suburban county north of New York City agreed last month to create hundreds of affordable homes in heavily white communities and encourage nonwhites to move in.

The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, which brokered the deal, said it could have far-reaching national consequences. Officials said it signaled a new commitment to fair housing by the Obama administration.
