Marine from Yonkers killed in Afghanistan

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 24-year-old Marine from Yonkers who was killed in Afghanistan Thursday.

Lance Corp. John Malone was shot on patrol near the Farah Province. He was deployed in May to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

Malone graduated from Gorton High School and worked at a Pathmark supermarket in Yonkers until 2007, when he enlisted in the Marines and moved to Hawaii.

Pathmark manager Sheila Velez remembers Malone as a great worker and a role model for teens.

"If I had a son, I'd want him to be just like him," Velez says.

Malone was scheduled to return home this fall.
