Montrose VA development draws fire from vets
Dozens of veterans held a rally Wednesday outside the VA Hospital in Montrose, protesting against the development of the hospital's campus.
Veteran George Ondak says if the plan goes forward, the hospital's special needs care unit will be transferred to Castle Point, forcing disabled veterans to travel further in order to obtain care.
Veteran Arthur Rickey also worries about soldiers currently serving overseas.
"How are you going to treat those boys when they come back from Iraq and Afghanistan?" he says.
The campus has received federal funds for repairs and upgrades. However, now the VA is considering leasing 160 acres to developers, who plan to build 400 housing units.
