FBI raids clinic of embattled Sen. Espada

FBI agents raided a Bronx health clinic run by state Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. yesterday as part of a criminal investigation into whether he embezzled millions from a charitable organization.

The raid comes on the heels of a civil lawsuit filed yesterday by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo against Espada, who represents the Bronx but has a home in Mamaroneck.

The Democratic lawmaker is accused of taking $14 million from his own clinic, Soundview Healthcare Network, over five years and spending it on campaign expenses, vacations and lavish meals.

Cuomo's chief of staff says Espada could also face criminal charges including mail fraud, wire fraud, theft of government funds and conspiracy.

Sen. Espada has called the lawsuit a political witch hunt. He says it's payback for a Republican-backed coup that he led in Albany last summer.
