Garza was last seen with Michael Mele, a convicted sex offender from Newburgh, after leaving a Manhattan nightclub with him. Her remains were discovered in a rural area just outside of Scranton, Pa.

Garza?s death has been confirmed as a homicide. Investigators combed through the woods looking for evidence connecting Mele to the scene.

State police are trying to get the remains released from Pennsylvania authorities so an autopsy and other tests can be performed in New York.

Police say Mele remains a key suspect in the case, although he has not been charged in her death. An investigation revealed that Mele?s Wallkill apartment was wiped clean with bleach and that a section of carpeting was missing. Police say Mele has not been cooperative with the investigation.
