Police seek link between Mele, Garza murder

Police say they are looking for ways to link an Orange County sex offender with Laura Garza's death as the young woman's body was returned to New York for an autopsy.

After returning to the area in Pennsylvania where Garza's remains were found, New York State Police say they found evidence that Mele had connections to Scranton, where his brother attended school, and the Poconos, where his parents own property.

Officials believe Garza was killed in New York and that her body was moved to Pennsylvania.

Convicted sex offender Michael Mele and Garza met at a Manhattan nightclub in December of 2008 and were last seen together in Newburgh. Investigators searched Mele's Wallkill apartment and say they found it had been scrubbed clean with bleach.

An autopsy on Garza's body is scheduled for tomorrow.
