Stepsisters in court on arson charges

Two stepsisters accused of burning down their own home appeared in Ossining court yesterday, and are now being investigated as to whether they tried killing their own parents in a separate incident.

Miranda Fernandez, 14, and Pauline Benefield, 15, are being accused of setting three separate fires in their Jenkins Street home on St. Patrick's Day this year.

Prosecutors now believe that the girls may have also tried poisoning their parents a few days before the fire. Miranda also allegedly posted threatening song lyrics on her Facebook page, talking about setting a mother on fire.

Lawyers for the teens requested that the two undergo psychiatric evaluations. Both are due back in court on June 29.
