Irritating odor empties Bronxville School

Several students and faculty members at Bronxville School became ill due to an unidentified substance that resulted in an evacuation yesterday.

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m., when about a dozen people began coughing and complaining of eye irritation.

EMS workers and a hazmat team arrived on the scene and evacuated the school for about two hours. Eastchester Fire Chief Michael Grogan says the source of the problem was not identified, but it might have been pepper spray.

The Westchester County Department of Health has ruled out the presence of any toxic matter.

Parents say they're relieved no one was seriously hurt.
