Residents start anti-crime group in Mt. Vernon

Hundreds of men took their oath to become members of 'The Peacekeepers,' a group of Mount Vernon residents who say they're frustrated with the level of crime in their community.

The organization is made up of 238 Mount Vernon men who say their goal is not to be police officers, but to help better the community in a peaceful manner.

Those who were sworn in have been training for five weeks, taking courses on basic medical practices and how best to communicate with people in the neighborhood.

Dennis Muhammad, founder of the group, says the Peacekeepers will be marching tomorrow at the Grace Baptist Church on Sixth Avenue and invites anyone who wants to make the streets safe to join them.
