Youth advocate laid to rest in Yorktown

Community leader and children's advocate Joan Valenstein was laid to rest yesterday in Yorktown.

Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects at Clark Funeral Home.

Valenstein was driving near Hawthorne Drive on Thursday night when she crossed the double-yellow line and crashed into an oncoming truck.

Valenstein, 78, was one of the founders of "Community Day" in Yorktown. Her family says she spent her lifetime mentoring children, trying to keep them off the streets.
