Yonkers school board member sworn in

Former Yonkers City Engineer Andrew Api was sworn in as member of the Yonkers school board yesterday afternoon as the superintendent announced a plan to save the troubled district some money.

Api was sworn in along with Reverend Gerald Sudick, who was reappointed to his post as the school board's vice president.

Superintendent Bernard P. Pierorazio says that the two face one of the most serious fiscal crises in the history of the Yonkers School District, a near $43 million deficit.

Pierorazio announced a plan that he says would prevent nearly 450 layoffs, a plan that includes pay freezes for all union and non-union employees and a $9 million cut in non-educational services.
