Cuomo picks Rochester mayor as his running mate
Democratic candidate for governor Andrew Cuomo today named Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy as his running mate, a choice for lieutenant governor that gives the ticket some upstate balance.
The choice of Duffy adds geographic balance to the ticket headed by Cuomo, who grew up in Queens and has lived in Westchester County and Manhattan. Cuomo also says he wants someone who is clearly able to take over as governor, if necessary.
While Duffy will almost certainly get the party's endorsement at the convention, he will have a challenger. Manhattan businessman Bill Samuels says he will run against Duffy in a primary this September.
