Man robs Ramapo Howard Johnson's Inn at gunpoint
Police are investigating an overnight armed robbery at a motel in Rockland County.
According to police, it was just before 2 a.m. today when a man came into the lobby of the Howard Johnson's Inn in Airmont.
Cops say the suspect, described as a 6-foot tall black man and about 200 pounds, began talking to a woman who was working the front desk about a getting room. They say the worker turned her back to the man to get some information and that's when he jumped over the desk and showed what police say appeared to be a handgun and demanded money. He then reached in the money draw and grabbed the cash. They have not diclosed how much money was taken.
After getting the money, the suspect told the woman to get in a bathroom and stay there until he left. Police say there was no physical contact and the woman was not injured.
Investigators say the man then went out the door where a driver was waiting. "He got into what appears to be a dark-colored possibly four-door sedan and took off. He was in and out of the hotel in about four minutes," says Ramapo Lt. Detective Mark Emma.
The hotel does have surveillance cameras, but it's older equipment so police say it will take some time to view the video.
