Lawmakers call for shutdown of IP
(01/13/03) WHITE PLAINS - Lawmakers on two county committees are calling for the immediate shutdown of Indian Point following the release of a report, which found the nuclear plant's evacuation plan to be inadequate.
The report, which was released Friday, was conducted by former Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt. His findings stated that the public would not be protected from radiation in the event of a disaster at Indian Point.
Last year, the county's Public Safety Committee and Committee on Environment and Health were the ones to demand that an independent report be conducted. Now, those two groups want Indian Point closed immediately until all flaws in the evacuation plan are fixed.
But a spokesperson for Entergy, the company that owns Indian Point, feels the two committees may be jumping the gun.
