Anti-nuclear groups protest IP reports

(01/14/03) WHITE PLAINS - Anti-nuclear groups are calling on Governor George Pataki to boycott the annual reporting process for Indian Point. The organizations would also like to see the nuclear plants be shutdown.

Members of Riverkeeper, Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition and a number of other groups held a meeting to demand that Indian Point be closed if the check lists of last year's planning activities are not filed as required by federal regulators.

Supporting the demands made by the organizations, County Executive Andy Spano said he will hold back his annual report to the state. Spano feels the feds should help pay for extra planning to help the county meet the expectations of James Lee Witt's report on the Indian Point evacuation plan.

The anti-nuclear groups also asked that other counties surrounding Indian Point hold back their annual reports.

If the demands of the anti-nuclear groups are met, it would leave the fate of Indian Point in the hands of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
