Stray bullet shooter found guilty

(02/04/03) YONKERS - The man responsible for firing the high powered rifle that killed 1-year-old Amy Guzman has been found guilty of second-degree manslaughter.

Kashawn Jones, 23, was found guilty of killing Amy. She was shot in the head by a stray bullet last year while she was sitting with her parents watching TV in their Yonkers apartment. The bullet hit a stop sign, then ricocheted into Amy's Elm Street home and struck her in the head.

Jones was facing a murder charge, but instead the jury convicted him of manslaughter, which carries a 5-15 year sentence as opposed to life. He was also found guilty of reckless endangerment, third-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. The defense maintained that it was all an accident and that Jones was trying to remove the bullets when the rifle went off.

Sentencing will take place on April 24.
