Cops searching for Rye Brook shooters

(07/13/03) RYE BROOK - Police are still trying to track down the two gunmen who opened fire on a Rye Brook couple on Friday. Gunfire broke out in the quiet community just after 1:00 in the afternoon, leaving one woman dead and her husband in critical condition.

News 12 Westchester learned on Sunday from sources that investigators issued search warrants for the two suspects in the Bronx.

The 31-year-old female victim, Danielle Bongiovanni, was shot in the neck and was dead on arrival at United Hospital in Port Chester. Her husband, 38-year-old Richard Graziano, is struggling for his life at Westchester Medical Center. A close friend of Graziano told News 12 Westchester on Sunday that Graziano underwent a second emergency surgery at Westchester Medical Center, but he is expected to pull through.

Bongiovanni's wake was held Monday night at the Harrison Funeral Home. Her funeral was held Tuesday morning at St. Gregory's Church in Harrison.

At the time of the shootings, the couple's two young boys, another family member and a housekeeper were on the premises.

Police were called to the Rye Brook home at the corner of Lincoln and Westchester Avenues when one of the children called 911 to report shots fired. Two suspects, one only described as black and the other believed to be Hispanic, fled the scene in a green Subaru with Canadian plates. Police say that robbery was the likely motive. Mr. Graziano runs a successful contracting business, and according to neighbors who see people arriving to collect their wages each week, Friday is payday.

This is the first homicide in Rye Brook in 15 years, and the mayor has tried to ease concerns by stating this was an isolated incident. Area residents just hope the police quickly find the people responsible for shaking up the usually calm neighborhood.
