Sewage leak causes beaches to close

(07/13/03) MAMARONECK - The water at several sound-shore beaches was off-limits last weekend. High bacteria levels from a sewage leak prompted the Westchester County Health Department to prohibit swimming at certain beaches in New Rochelle and Mamaroneck.

Mamaroneck's Harbor Beach and Hudson Park Beach In New Rochelle are two beaches closed until further notice. The sewage leak causing the closure comes from a pipe near Boston Post Road. The leak emptied into the Mamaroneck River, which then emptied into Harbor Island. The county health department closed the beaches until the sewer is fixed. Mamaroneck Mayor Phil Trifiletti said the leak would be fixed in a week.

Folks who visited the affected beaches settled for the sand and the sun. Other beachgoers who wanted to swim last weekend went to Rye to enjoy the waters off Playland.

Mamaroneck's Harbor Beach just reopened about a week and a half ago after being closed for three years from high bacteria levels.
