Big Apple Classic gets underway

(07/17/03) NEW ROCHELLE - Fans of women's golf were able to get a glimpse of their favorite players as the Sybase Big Apple Classic teed off this week. Unfortunately, some of the big names opted not to make the trip.

The first round of golf Thursday drew a small crowd at Wykagil Country Club, and some say it's because big names such as Annika Sorenstam, Se Ri Pak and Juli Inkster are not playing this year.

Officials say many of the top names did not make it because the tournament was smack in the middle of the U.S. and British Opens.

Tournament Director Ray Gerosa says he still expects a decent turnout. He says next year will be different because the tournament will be held in May instead.
