60-foot milk tanker crashes on I-684

(07/17/03) BEDFORD - A milk truck traveling from Long Island to Connecticut on busy I-684 crossed the median into oncoming traffic, and crashed on Thursday evening. Miraculously, no one was injured as the truck ended up deep in the woods off the southbound side of I-684 near the Bedford town line.

Steve Sniffin of Connecticut was driving the 60-foot milk tanker when he says he choked while drinking his coffee. He says he began coughing so hard, it caused him to veer from his lane, barrel across the median, cross busy I-684 without hitting a car, and go 60 yards into the woods.

Sniffin walked away with a few minor scratches he says he probably got while climbing out of the truck in the middle of the woods. He says he feels incredibly blessed to be able to walk away safe and sound.

It took highway crews more than four hours to get the truck out of the woods. Sniffin was ticketed for failure to stay in his lane.
