Trash compactor ablaze twice in one day

(07/20/03) WHITE PLAINS - A fire was set off in a trash compactor in a White Plains apartment building Sunday afternoon. Firefighters said it was the second time on Sunday that the compactor went up in flames.

Around 8:00 Sunday morning, a lit cigarette was thrown into the compactor starting the first fire. Fire crews responded to 225 Martin Luther King Boulevard a second time around noon. The residents of the nine-story building were not evacuated, but they chose to leave their apartments because of the heavy smoke.

Fire investigators are investigating the cause of the second fire.
