Chlorine leak at a Valhalla water plant

(07/24/03) WHITE PLAINS - Firefighters, police and Hazmat crews had their hands full Thursday when a chlorine leak was discovered at the Department of Environmental Protection water treatment plant in Valhalla.

Workers at the plant along with those at a nearby day care center and day camp were evacuated while emergency crews investigated.

The DEP and the Mount Pleasant police said the amount of chlorine found turned out to be relatively small, but since it's a potentially deadly gas they did not want to take any chances.

Once the area was deemed officially safe workers were let back in the building. The day care center and the day camp will be open Friday.
