Harrison justice opts out of realty deal

(07/24/03) HARRISON - The Harrison justice, who sentenced Patrick Rukaj for fatally punching fellow classmate Rob Viscome, has decided not to act as the Rukaj family's real estate agent.

Following public outcry Wednesday, Harrison Town Justice John Voetsch has opted not to help sell the Rukaj family home, which is valued at $2.5 million. In a statement to News 12 Westchester, Voetsch says in consideration of the integrity of the court I have decided neither I nor Corner Ridge Realty will participate in the transaction.

Political analyst, Bill Aronwald says Voetsch is making the right move because there appeared to be a conflict. He says as a justice you must follow a code of conduct and not compromise the public's trust in the judicial system.

For now, the Rukaj estate is off the market; tied up in a bankruptcy proceeding.
