Virus strikes Mamaroneck nursing home

(07/25/03) MAMARONECK - Eighty-eight residents at the Sarah Neuman Nursing Home in Mamaroneck remain in quarantine after a number of people became sick with an unidentified virus.

Staff members at the home, which is located on Palmer Avenue, were forced to quarantine residents after signs of the virus appeared on July 17. Since that time 30 people have come down with the mystery illness, four have been hospitalized and three have died.

Health department officials are working to identify the virus that caused the patients to experience nasal congestion, coughing and mild fever. The nursing home's medical director says so far influenza has been ruled out but the adenovirus has not.

Test results are expected to completed within two weeks.
