Picnic held for families of fallen NY cops

(07/29/03) RYE PLAYLAND - More than 100 family members of fallen police officers gathered at Rye Playland for the annual "New York State Shields" picnic. Organizers say the picnic is designed to let family members know that their loved ones have not been forgotten.

The picnic featured food, rides and entertainment. Those in attendance, however, say the most important aspect of the picnic was a chance to share their stories with people in similar situations.

Family members say it is important to talk to others to help ease their grieving. A Westchester woman, who lost her husband 24 years ago, says she always tries to attend the picnics to help those who are just beginning to deal with the grief of losing a loved one.

The picnic was organized by the New York State Shields Organization. The group was founded in 1990.
