Trying to stop Yonkers street violence

(08/02/03) YONKERS - A week after two young men were gunned down within blocks of one another, Yonkers residents are coming together to try to stop the violence. A neighborhood watch group is teaming up with police in an attempt to keep drug dealers and gangs off the street.

Police say the latest victim, 20-year-old Devon Pegram, was shot execution style on Warburton Avenue on Thursday. Pegram's death follows the murder of 22-year-old Kenneth Whitehead, who was killed last weekend. Police are investigating whether drugs played a role in the two homicides.

Yonkers residents say drugs are a major problem in the neighborhood. They say, no matter how many times police chase them away from street corners, they keep coming back. While the police beef up security to stop the violence, neighbors are taking some steps of their own. A "Stop The Violence" rally will take place at the Nepperhan Community Center at 342 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
