Floods, power outages hit Westchester
(08/04/03) WHITE PLAINS - Fierce thunderstorms ripped through Westchester Monday leaving commuters scrambling for alternate routes and residents without power.
Heavy rains forced officials to close the Hutchinson River Parkway and the Bronx River Parkway because of flooding. And in some cases, residents in Yonkers were left bailing water from their basements.
Meanwhile, the storm left a number of residents in Northern Westchester without power. Con Edison reported scattered power outages shortly before 10 a.m. due to lightning. Although there was no flooding in the northern parts of the county, highway departments were out cleaning catch basins to try and avoid any future problems since weather forecasters are predicting more rain.
