Anti-violence rally held in Yonkers

(08/05/03) YONKERS - Some Yonkers residents are working to clean up their city, which has been plagued by recent violence. Hundreds turned out for a "Stop the Violence" rally Monday at the Nepperahan Community Center on Warburton Avenue.

Hoping to find ways to keep the streets safe, some residents suggested the need for more police patrols, jobs and after school programs. But they also say it takes a village to raise a child, and they want parents to take more responsibility.

The meeting was planned before a series of recent shootings in the area. Devon Pegram was shot to death on Warburton Avenue Thursday night and there was a non-fatal shooting on Locust Hill Avenue on Sunday. Just a week before that Kenneth Whitehead was killed on Ravine Avenue.

Police say they're still urging the community to come forward with information about those crimes.

Yonkers residents say they know there's more to keeping the streets safe than one meeting. Many say they're ready for a long-term commitment.
