West Nile found in mosquitoes in Rye

(08/05/03) RYE - August is peak season for mosquitoes and West Nile virus, and already a pool of mosquitoes taken from Rye has tested positive for the virus.

Health commissioner Dr. Joshua Lipsman says residents, especially the elderly, need to take precautions. He says everyone should wear bug repellant. Another way to protect against the West Nile virus is to make sure that any stagnant water is cleared away.

The county has already dropped 60,000 pesticide tablets to kill mosquito larvae. So far there have been no reported cases of Westchester residents contracting the the virus.
