Yorktown hamlet wants its independence
(08/07/03) YORKTOWN - An attorney representing Mohegan Lake is looking to split from the Town of Yorktown citing the area is being ignored.
Mohegan Lake is a hamlet in the north-western corner of Yorktown along Route Six at the border of Cortlandt.
Attorney Michael Saltzman says the draft of a new master plan aimed at ending congestion and over-development in Yorktown does not reflect the concerns of the town's northern areas. Keri Greiss, who owns an ice cream parlor on Route Six says she agrees.
Supervisor Linda Cooper contends it's too early in the process to say the final plan won't reflect Mohegan Lake's concerns.
For now, Saltzman says he is offering secession as one option to get the town board to hear the concerns of Mohegan Lake. He says if things do not improve in the next six months, it may become the only alternative.
