Fire in Mamaroneck business district

(08/07/03) MAMARONECK - A fire in the heart of Mamaroneck's business district has damaged several stores and apartment buildings and brought traffic in the busy area to a grinding halt on Thursday.

The fire broke out just before 4 p.m.on Mamaroneck Avenue between Palmer and Prospect Avenues. Firefighters from five different departments battled the blaze that quickly turned into two alarms.

Eyewitnesses say it all began inside the Turquoise Mediterranean Restaurant and quickly spread next door to Gino's Nail salon.

When firefighters arrived they immediately searched both the stores and the adjoining apartments for anyone that could have been trapped.

They say the fire itself was knocked down within half an hour, but what followed was the exhausting task of knocking holes into the roof and interior walls looking for hidden flare ups.

At least three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. No one else, was hurt.

The storefronts and apartment buildings suffered heavy damage. Fire crews are still investigating, but so far they don't know what caused the blaze.
