Two men stage robbery in Yonkers
(08/08/03) YONKERS - Two men are under arrest for what police say was a staged robbery in Yonkers. Early reports indicated that a robbery was happening on Central Avenue. But now, police say it was all a scheme between two brothers trying to make off with thousands of dollars.
Police say Jesus Arriaga and his half brother Richard Batista, both from the Soundview section of the Bronx, planned the bogus heist that would have resulted with the two men stealing almost $40,000. Instead, they wound up getting booked on a charges of grand larceny.
According to police, Arriaga takes responsibility for the plan, saying he and his brother have recently fallen on hard financial times.
Arriaga is an 8-year employee of Gidron Motors on Central Avenue in Yonkers. Friday was pay day, and Gidron Motors typically cashes checks as a courtesy to its employees. Police say Arriaga was responsible for running that weekly errand.
Police say after he cashed the checks, the two brothers met up at the tower records parking lot on Central Avenue. It was there where Arriaga gave Batista the money. Then police say one followed the other onto Central Avenue, where Battista forced his brother off the road, aiming his gun at him, making it appear he was robbing Arriaga.
Both men are at the city jail pending arraignment.
