Standoff in Mt. Vernon ends after 9 hours

(08/10/03) MOUNT VERNON - An armed man held police at bay for roughly nine hours Saturday in Mount Vernon. The armed standoff ended when the man took his own life, said police.

The police standoff was reported at a house on 220 Hillside Ave. in Mount Vernon, near the corner of Farrell Avenue. The neighborhood is just west of the Hutchinson River Parkway. Parts of the Mount Vernon neighborhood were evacuated during the standoff.

Mount Vernon police say the armed man was 29-year-old Justin Baynes. They said he was distraught over the recent death of his mother.
