Operation center may move to Hawthorne

(08/12/03) HAWTHORNE - The county Legislature decided Monday to move its emergency operation center to Hawthorne.

The proposal is designed to improve communications with the state by moving the county's center to the same building where the state's emergency management office is located. The building is currently under construction and lawmakers say leasing this space, rather than renovating another building, will save taxpayers millions of dollars.

The legislators say that the present operation center located in the county building in White Plains is inadequate since September 11th.

A public hearing will take place September 8 and if there are no objections, the county will go ahead with the move.
