An unsung Westchester hero dies

Peter Cann, also known as "Mr Red Cross," has died at the age of 55. Cann's career as the emergency services director of the Westchester Red Cross spanned 20 years. He helped countless victims in the county, providing emergency relief for families after fires and other disasters.

Cann died sometime Sunday night in his sleep at his home in Yonkers. Co-workers found him Tuesday morning when he didn't show up for work.

Colleagues describe Cann as a dedicated, loyal and private man with a big heart for the public. Through the years, Cann would personally show up at almost every disaster in Westchester County to lend a helping hand. He was also always willing to share his expertise with the public, often appearing on News 12 Westchester to dish out safety advice.

Cann is survived by a brother and a wife. The wake is scheduled at the Flynn Memorial Home in Yonkers on Thursday and Friday. The funeral will be held at St. John Episcopal Church also in Yonkers on Saturday.
