Power restored to parts of Westchester County
Power is slowly being restored to parts of Westchester County and New York City after a widespread outage along the eastern seaboard left Bronx and city residents in the dark.
NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg says there is no evidence of terrorism and that power is being restored. He says the outage appears to be connected to a malfunction near Niagara Falls.
The Westchester County Airport was affected by a widespread power outage along the eastern seaboard. Indian Point was also shut down. Firefighters were called to Rye Playland to help kids stranded on rides after the power went out.
Meanwhile, workers looking to get home Thursday were forced out into the streets of NYC. All mass transit was suspended. Subways, elevators and airports, including JFK and LaGuardia were all affected by the blackout. Traffic lights were out and cell phone service was sporadic.
There were also reports of outages in northern New Jersey and in several Vermont towns. In Connecticut, Metro-North Railroad service was knocked out. The outage even affected parts of Canada.
