Fire damages New Rochelle discount store; no injuries

Fire officials in New Rochelle are investigating an early morning blaze that broke out on North Avenue near Sickles Avenue Wednesday. The fire severely damaged a 99-cent super discount store, but according to firefighters that's not where the fire started.Investigators say the fire began about 12:30 a.m. in illegal apartments behind the store. A one-story extension containing several bunkrooms made of plywood housed several employees from the store. Firefighters say a false wall was built to make it look like the end of the store but the wall actually hid the rooms. The six people living in those rooms were able to get out of the building safely and were eventually able to get back into their homes.According to the fire chief, none of the people living in the illegal bunkrooms spoke English. They are now looking for the owner of the store for questioning.
