Gas prices continue to skyrocket
Gas prices have been surging recently from coast to coast, and the average national price per gallon has jumped a record 12 cents over the past week. According to the Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection, the petroleum industry scaled back production in anticipation of an increased flow of oil from Iraq following the war. The increased oil flow has not happened, but the demand has risen.A Shell gas station on Route 22 in Bedford is currently one of Westchester's most expensive, with regular grade gasoline selling for $2.19 per gallon. A station in New Rochelle is also pricing a gallon of regular at $2.19. However, some relative bargains can be found nearby. Only a few miles away in Larchmont, gas can be found at $1.73 per gallon. The latest county survey shows the average price of gasoline has gone up 20 cents per gallon since the previous survey on July 31. Many people are expecting prices to go down after the Labor Day weekend, but demand for heating oil lurks just around the corner with the approach of winter.
