Senator John Edwards visits Westchester on campaign trail

There is still over a year to go, but the race for president is heating up, and Westchester is already playing a role. On Sunday, Senator John Edwards (D-NC) stopped by to meet with supporters in Katonah. Edwards is one of nine candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president.Westchester County has always been an influential area in New York for Democrats seeking nomination, as Democrats outnumber Republicans in Westchester by about 70,000 members. Edwards needed to make his voice heard if he hopes to be seen as a viable candidate in the already crowded Democratic race that includes heavy hitters such as Vermont Governor Howard Dean (D), Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and Senator John Kerry (D-MA). Edwards hopes to gain political ground by showing he was a key leader in the "No Child Left Behind Act," and will likely continue to take issue with the Bush administration's current health care policies.Edwards will be announcing his official presidential candidacy later this week.
