Rye Playland gearing up for Hurricane Isabel
As Hurricane Isabel continues to bear down on the coast of North Carolina, preparations continue in Westchester to handle what may be some rough weather ahead. According to the News 12 Westchester Hurricane Isabel Center, the storm is not expected to make a direct hit in Westchester, but it could still bring high winds, rain and rough seas.
Prisoners from the Westchester County Penitentiary were filling 40-pound sand bags to protect the ice casino at Rye Playland. The building suffered heavy damage due to flooding seawater back in 1999 during Hurricane Floyd. Rye Playland's location on the Long Island Sound makes it an easy target for a storm like Isabel.
In past years the park has been ravaged by hurricanes and nor'easters and park director Joe Montalto says they've seen their share of destruction.
Outside of Playland, people who live in Rye are also getting prepared. Residents are stocking up on flashlights, batteries and water.
County Executive Andy Spano is also keeping a keen eye on the storm. He says Westchester will be ready for anything.
