Ossining hit-and-run victim returns home from hospital; cops searching for driver

(09/27/03) OSSINING - The 14-year-old victim of a hit-and-run in Ossining was supposed to be released from the hospital on Friday, but doctors opted to have her stay another day. Maria Minchala was finally released from Westchester Medical Center on Saturday and is now home.

Maria was seriously injured after being hit by a pickup truck on her way to school Monday. While she was at the hospital in Valhalla, her family had been keeping vigil since the accident. Maria's family members say Maria hopes to go back to school soon, but they do not know exactly when she will be able to return.

Meanwhile, police are searching for Efen Aucay, the man they say hit the girl and then drove off. Police credit the public with helping them locate the truck, leading them to learn the identity of the driver.

Anyone with information on Aucay's whereabouts is asked to call Ossining police at (914) 941-4099.
